Amangiri has been on my bucket list for many, many years, but a place I never actually thought I’d ever be able to go to. But for my 30th birthday, after months of saving and giving into a desperate desire to travel and a newfound you-only-live-once mindset, I splurged and booked a stay.
Within minutes of arriving in Amangiri, I immediately understood why it was the go-to destination for the rich and famous and why, despite the obscene price tag for a night’s stay, it was a place they came back to so frequently (which, for the record, is something I most definitely would not be able to do).
To get to the resort, we drove on an unassuming road through beautiful canyons and massive red rocks. It was like entering another planet (or stepping into Westworld, if you’re a fan of the show). The stone oasis that is Amangiri is secluded and very private, surrounded by hundreds of acres of scenic Utah desert. With its clean architecture, stone floors, and concrete walls, it’s a minimalist’s dream and an ideal getaway for ultimate peace and relaxation. Because it’s so spacious and secluded, it often felt like we had the place to ourselves, which was welcome in this new age of physical distancing.

It may be hard to believe, but Amangiri is even more stunning in real life than in the photos. And while most who visit rave about the stunning design and landscape, the food is also worth mentioning. When we weren’t lounging by the pool or going for a swim in either of the two rock pools, we were eating - and eating well. The menu is inspired by the culinary heritage of the Navajo and the American Southwest and offers sustainable, seasonal dishes, which made dining here one of our favorite parts of the whole trip.
While we spent most of our time at the resort itself, we did spend an afternoon exploring a bit, as there is a lot to see and do around the area. We initially had planned to do a kayak excursion on Lake Powell, but due to the extreme heat conditions, it was cancelled. Instead, we visited Lone Rock Beach - one of the most beautiful and unique beaches I’ve ever seen.
To sum it up, visiting Amangiri was even better than I could have imagined and I feel so incredibly grateful to have been able to experience it. It was the most incredible way to celebrate the end of my 20s and the beginning of my 30s. While I’ve been lucky to visit many beautiful destinations, this easily made it to the top of the list, right next to Milos, Greece.
